How Many Practice Questions Should You Do Before a Certification Exam?

There is no number. Question count is the wrong unit, and the reason is easy to show: a bank that covers every exam objective at 1,800 questions beats a bank of 4,000 that leaves two domains thin. What you are actually trying to buy with practice questions is coverage of the objectives, plus enough repeat exposure to the ones you get wrong that they stop being wrong.

Still, people asking this question usually want something concrete, and there is something concrete to give them. We build and maintain 28 question banks across cloud, IT, healthcare, beauty licensing, food safety and military entrance testing. The stated minimums add up to just over 76,000 questions. Comparing them side by side shows what actually drives bank size, and it is not exam difficulty.

The spread runs from 1,850 to 4,000. That is a factor of about 2.2 between the smallest bank and the largest, which is narrower than most people expect. If question count tracked difficulty, the professional-tier exams would sit at the top and the entry-level ones at the bottom. They do not. The AWS Cloud Practitioner bank, an entry-level cert, is larger than the SnowPro Core bank. The Google GenAI Leader bank is the smallest on the list and the exam is not the easiest.

What Actually Drives Bank Size

Three things, in roughly this order.

How much arbitrary recall the exam demands. This is the big one. An exam that asks you to match 40 named services to their use cases needs far more items than one that tests a small set of principles applied to scenarios. Look at where the service-recall exams land in the table. The AWS and CompTIA banks cluster in the upper half because there is a long tail of individual facts, each of which needs its own item, and each of which you can miss independently.

How wide the objective list is. The ASVAB and TEAS banks are large because those exams span several unrelated subjects. Arithmetic reasoning has nothing to do with mechanical comprehension. You cannot cover one by studying the other, so the bank has to carry both at full depth.

How stable the material is. Licensing exams built on a fixed body of law and procedure, like the NIC beauty exams or ServSafe, can be covered thoroughly and then left alone. Cloud certifications cannot. When AWS revised one of our exams this year, the whole generative AI surface entered scope and the bank had to grow to match. Bank size on a fast-moving cert is partly a record of how many times the exam has changed.

Coverage Is the Unit

Here is how our own engine answers the question, because it answers it in ratios rather than counts.

Each app has an Exam Ready threshold, and the questions-answered component of it is set at roughly 80% of that app's bank. In the AWS Cloud Practitioner app that constant reads questionsAnswered: 1200, commented as about 80% of the 1,546-question multiple-choice bank. In an app with a smaller bank the number is smaller. The target moves with the bank because the thing being measured is what fraction of the material you have seen, not how many taps you have made.

Answering questions is also only one of four inputs. The readiness model weights accuracy at 35%, coverage at 30%, consistency at 15% and confidence calibration at 20%. You can answer 2,000 questions and not be ready, because volume with 60% accuracy and no repeat exposure to your misses is just a long way of confirming what you already knew.

This is why a bigger bank is not automatically better. Extra questions help when they cover objectives the existing items miss, or when they give you a second and third encounter with a concept you failed the first time. They do nothing when they are the same six ideas rephrased. A 4,000-question bank with 400 distinct concepts and ten paraphrases each is worse preparation than a 2,000-question bank with 1,200 distinct concepts, and you cannot tell which one you have by looking at the number on the box.

What We Cannot Tell You

You will find articles claiming that readiness plateaus at a specific item count. We are not going to give you one, because we do not have the data to support it and neither, as far as we can tell, does anyone else publishing a figure.

Our apps store all progress on the device. There is no server collecting how many questions each person answered and whether they later passed. That architecture is deliberate, and generating the statistic would mean giving it up. It does mean the one study that would settle this question, thousands of learners with item counts matched to real exam outcomes, is not ours to run. Any number we published would be a guess with a chart around it.

Two things can be said without inventing anything. Retrieval practice beats rereading, and spacing your reviews beats massing them. Both are well supported in the cognitive science literature and neither depends on hitting a magic item count.

Where Volume Genuinely Matters

Count matters more on some exams than others, and the table shows the pattern.

On service-recall exams, volume is doing real work. Every AWS service you can name on sight is a question you will not lose. There is no way to reason your way from first principles to knowing that one service extracts tables from scanned documents while another searches across them. You either recognise them or you do not, and recognition comes from repeated exposure. If you are preparing for a cloud or IT certification, err toward more questions and prioritise breadth of service coverage over drilling any one domain.

On exams built from a stable body of law and procedure, volume hits diminishing returns sooner. Once you have covered the sanitation rules or the scope-of-practice boundaries and can apply them to a new scenario, additional questions mostly re-test the same understanding. Your time is better spent on the scenarios you get wrong than on fresh items.

On broad aptitude tests, treat each subject as a separate exam with its own coverage target. An overall percentage across the whole bank will hide a weak subject until test day.

How To Tell When You Have Done Enough

Four checks, none of which is a count.

  • Coverage. Have you seen questions from every objective in the official exam guide, including the domains with the smallest weights? Pull up the guide and tick them off.
  • Accuracy on second sight. Take the items you got wrong and answer them again days later, cold. Getting them right immediately after reading the explanation means very little.
  • Calibration. When you feel sure, are you right? Confident and wrong is the state that fails exams, and it is invisible unless you record how sure you felt before checking.
  • Timed performance. Can you hold your accuracy under the real clock? Untimed accuracy is a different skill.

If all four hold, you are ready whether that took 600 questions or 3,000. Fail one and more questions of the same kind will not fix it.
